The 3 Biggest Beauty Mistakes

With today’s makeup, you can create any look that you could possibly imagine. From basic to bold, from simple to glam, there are as many looks as there are women in this world. But even in this “anything goes” atmosphere, there are definitely things to avoid when trying to look your best.

  1. Skipping primer. Primer is essential with today’s mineral makeup and bold colors. There are primers for eyeshadow, foundation, and even mascara. One purpose of primer is to create a barrier between your skin and the rest of your makeup, so that the makeup doesn’t clog your pores. Another reason is that it creates an even base for the makeup so that you get a flawless finish. It also keeps eyeshadow from creasing, mascara from flaking, etc. Although it takes an extra minute or two, it will save you time from reapplying later in the day.
  2. Avoid the “caked” look. Oh my, have you seen that woman who looks like she has a parched desert on her face? You know the one, her foundation and powder are so thick that it looks like her face will actually crack if she smiles. I hope this doesn’t describe you. If so…back away from the makeup. Just kidding, but really, more is not always better. To get a more natural look, make sure that your foundation is correctly matched to your skin undertone (yellow, pink or neutral). Most of the time, women who wear too much makeup are trying to cover up the lines from foundation in the wrong color. If your foundation is correctly matched, it should practically disappear as you’re blending it in with the sponge. Apply with a sponge and always dab and blend a little at a time, you shouldn’t need a thick coat unless you trying to cover an uneven skin tone. And there are other ways to handle that.
  3. Over-plucking eyebrows. Years ago, the style was to make eyebrows really thin and then draw them in with an eyebrow pencil. I’m not sure who came up with that idea, but I’ve never been a fan of that. Today’s style is to go more natural, but to create a little higher arch. It makes the eyes look brighter and goes really well with today’s eyeshadow styles. If you’re worried that they won’t ever grow in, that’s usually not the case. It just takes a while, and there are some at-home remedies that you can try to get them to grow faster.

I think of beauty and makeup like a painter preparing his canvas. While you can have any look that you want with the makeup that’s available today, you’ll want to make sure that you prepare your canvas correctly before diggin’ into the paint.
