Review: Shankara Massage Oil

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old Hindu system of healing, based on knowledge of the effects and therapeutic uses of herbs and oils to bring balance to the body, mind and spirit. Shankara products combine modern Western knowledge with Ayurveda’s ancient wisdom in a unique product line.

The skincare line includes a 3-step cellulite reducing system and a state-of-the-art anti-aging system. All of Shankara’s products are all-natural, paraben- and alcohol-free and PETA approved and cruelty-free.

I was recently invited to try the Massage Oil line. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being.” Judith Bourgeois, Shankara’s spokesperson, teaches an effective neck self-massage in this YouTube video. I tried it myself using the Ayurvedic Body Massage Oil I (Vata), which is said to be ideal when one is feeling anxious, worried or scattered. Although I didn’t think I was feeling any of those feelings, the massage that Judith demonstrated certainly did relax me, especially my neck muscles, which tend to tighten up like over-tuned guitar strings by the end of the day. Judith herself was calming and engaging. (Or maybe that’s just the Vata talking.) The massage oils are pleasantly scented, but not overbearing.

The Shankara Massage Oil product line:

Ayurvedic Body Massage Oil I (Vata) – sesame oil, ashwagandha and shatavari calm, restore and relax the mind and body; ideal when feeling anxious, worried or scattered.
Ayurvedic Body Massage Oil II (Pitta) – creates a cooling and soothing effect when feeling irritable, angry or controlling, with a combination of sunflower oil, coconut oil and other essential oils and herbs.
Ayurvedic Body Massage Oil III (Kapha) – grapeseed oil, hazelnut oil and other active ingredients stimulate circulation and energizes and uplifts the senses, effective when feeling lethargic or tired.

The name “Shankara” means “Pure Beauty with Fully Blossomed Consciousness” in Sanskrit, which is reflected in the company’s logo as well as its mission to help bring health and balance to the world. Shankara’s net profits go to aid global non-profit humanitarian efforts supporting literacy, education, microfinance ventures for women and youth, disaster relief and rehabilitation projects.

Shankara products are available at select spas or on their website.
