“Dogtology: A Real Treat for Dog Lovers” Book Review + Giveaway

Dogtology: A Real Treat for Dog Lovers

A Dogtology Book Review by Trish Deitemyer

Do you give gifts to and from your dog? Is your Facebook feed filled with pictures and videos of pups? Does your dog have better clothes and accessories than you do? Well, sit. Stay. You just might be a “Dogtologist” aka “a dog lover”.

Don’t worry. I am, too. And it’s not a bad thing. But you should check out Jeff Lazarus’ book Dogtology: A Humorous Exploration of Man’s Fur-ocious Devotion to Dogs.(Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.  14.99) With charming wit and a profusion of dog puns, Dogtology explores our rabid reverence to all things canine. It reads like a Bible, complete with Commandments (well, Commands) and Books. The Book of Barks, for example, looks at communication between humans and dogs. Dogtologists tend to talk to, for, about, through and over their dogs. The Fifth Command says that whenever you talk to your dog, you must speak in QOE, or quadruple octave escalation, “the same high-pitched style of baby talk thou might use to talk a toddler of a ledge.” And when you really need someone to listen to you, your canine pal may be your best bet. Unlike human friends, your dog will never signal you to “hang on a sec” while he checks his text messages, start solving your problem for you, before you’ve even finished speaking or insert “vacant sounding ‘ah’s, ‘uh-huh’s, and ‘that must have been awful’s into your story while stealing glances at the…TV.”

Jeff Lazarus was inspired to write Dogtology by his own furry pal, Roamy. “He became my confidant,” says Lazarus, “my sidekick. I found I could be truer with him than with anyone else; so I wanted to hang with him day and night. He became my refuge, my sanity, my partner in crime.”

Dogtology, according to the book, is more than a “dog-matic” set of beliefs. It is a state of mind, where you can recognize and acknowledge your adoration for “Dog” and the privilege of sharing your life with him. Dogtology by Jeff Lazarus is a must for every dog lover’s library.

I have had dogs all of my life. One of the most noteworthy, Snowball, aka Bunny, passed away in April. When he was a puppy, I gave him to a woman with Alzheimer’s. Her family swears he was an angel in disguise. Unfortunately he became too large for her to handle (think Great Pyrenees) and I got him back. I miss him so.
